History of the Past and Present Day Orange County Regional History Center

The historical old Orange County Courthouse, which is located in Orlando, Florida, was constructed in 1927 in the Beaux-Arts architectural style.  According to the records it was built in the vicinity of a number of other previous judicial buildings.

The courthouse has been the main seat to many famous trials including; the serial killer Ted Bundy’s trial for the murder of Kimberly Leach, in 1980.

The Historical Society of Central Florida, which was formed in 1942, was formerly named the Orange County Historical Society and is located at the Orange County Regional History Center. The Historical Society preserves and collects not only history related to the Orange County Courthouse but of all the regional history of Central Florida region.

At the History Center you will find a collection of; furniture, household items, kitchenware, textiles, decorative arts, military, political, advertising artifacts, business signs, tools, medical items, citrus industry equipment, and Florida tourist souvenirs.  Contact the Curator of Collections at: collections@ocfl.net or by phone at 407.836.8559.

The center also houses more than 16,000 photographs and postcards collected all the way back to 1870 and then to the present day which documents Central Florida history.  Appointments preferred and you can contact them via email at: photos@ocfl.net or by phone: 407.836.8587.  (Two sets of hours – museum is open M-S, 10-5, and Sunday noon-5. The research center and library are appts preferred, Tues-Sat.)

The History Center also includes sections on upcoming exhibitions, current special exhibitions, permanent exhibitions, traveling exhibitions and balcony displays.
